Eating Gluten-Free and Soy-Free in Chiayi

As someone with Coeliac disease, knowing how challenging travelling through East Asia with dietary restrictions can be. Hidden ingredients, language barriers, and the risk of cross-contamination often make eating out stressful rather than enjoyable. Thankfully, Chiayi surprised me.

Why Chiayi is different?

One of the things about Chiayi's food culture is how flexible many local vendors are. Rather than following rigid "standard" orders, many meals are prepared according to personal preference, making it easier to request simple versions of traditional dishes.

Walking into my first turkey rice restaurant, I was understandably nervous. Even if a dish appears naturally gluten-free, cross-contamination is always a concern for anyone who with Coeliac disease.

Travelling with a local guide made a huge difference. An experienced guide can recommend vendors who are more accommodating and help communicate your dietary requirement clearly. In my case, my first bowl of turkey rice caused no issues, nor did the accompanying clam soup or seaweed side dishes.

Of course, every person with Coeliac disease has different sensitives, so always assess your own level of risk.

Ordering Turkey Rice Safely

if you are travelling independently and replying on a translation app, I found that keeping requests as simple as possible works best. Rather than asking about every ingredient on the menu, it is often easier to order the simplest version of a dish.

Chiayi isn't completely free from the challenges that come with coeliac disease, allergies or food intolerance. Cross-contamination is still a serious consideration, and restaurant staff cannot always be expected to understand the requirement of a strict gluten-free diet.

But compared with many destination I've traveled through, I have found Chiayi surprisingly approachable.

The city's flexible food culture, abundance of simple dishes and willingness to customize orders can make eating with dietary restrictions much more manageable — especially when you have someone local who can communicate your requirement and recommend appropriate vendors.

You can eat gluten-free and soy-free in Chiayi.

You just need to approach it thoughtfully, communicate clearly, and know which foods and vendors are most suitable for your individual needs.

And if you are like to experience Chiayi's food culture without spending your entire trip worrying about what is in your bowl, consider joining a local food tour. A knowledgeable guide can help you discover the dishes, markets and small vendors that you might otherwise miss — while helping you navigating the local food culture with greater confidence.
